James Watt (Jan. 30 1736 – Aug. 25 1819). Scottish inventor, mechanical engineer and chemist. Watt improved the steam engines of his day, making them more efficient. He also developed the concept of horsepower. The watt—a unit of power—was named after him (image source: wikipedia.org).
