Generative AI (GenAI): What is GenAI?

Generative AI uses Natural Language Processing technologies, or machine learning technology that gives a computer program the ability to understand human language and generate new content by utilizing existing text, audio, or images and other pre-existing content in response to a query. 

After the first release of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022, other companies started releasing their own GenAI apps and tools. As of summer 2025, There’s an AI for That lists over 38,000 tools on its site! Perhaps the most widely known GenAI tool is ChatGPT by OpenAI. 

In simpler terms, Generative AI (GenAI)  is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content using Large Language Models (LLMs), including text, images, audio and synthetic data.

Depending on the GenAI tool, Generative AI can create the following content by simple voice or typed prompts:
