Eli Whitney

Eli Whitney in 1822Eli Whitney (Dec. 8, 1765 - Jan. 8, 1825). American inventor and manufacturing pioneer. Although most famous for inventing the cotton gin, Whitney was an early adopter—and advocate of—the concept of interchangeable parts in manufacturing. The widespread adoption of the concept of interchangeable parts contributed to the U.S. victory in the Civil War.
Milling Machine
Whitney—along with other inventors—is credited with developing one of the first milling machines, in the time period shortly before his death.
